Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe!

12/12! Happy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe!

This year Mary has beckoned me to make beautiful art for her. I fell in love with her in high school after my whole, big family traveled to Mexico City to visit a home that my dad lived in as a child to celebrate my grandparent’s 50th wedding anniversary. I had never seen anything like her Basilica and was fascinated by the Miracle of her tilma.

I included her in my Marian print of different Marian apparitions that have a special place in my heart and life.

Then one night sitting on my couch, I was inspired to draw her in a little black and white image. That image turned into an enamel pin and then I wanted to make an Our Lady of Guadalupe bandana. I wanted it to be black and white for versatile clothing and had an idea to carve it by hand. I have the great fortune that my design assistant is a master print maker. Chelsea carved the image I drew by hand into linoleum and printed her in ink on paper. We then added cacti and roses to represent the story of Mary appearing to Juan Diego in the desert or Mexico.

We loved it so much that I then had the idea to turn the design into a swaddle blanket!! After waiting ages for them to be made, they are miraculously arriving TODAY. I can’t help but laugh over Mary’s surprise guidance in this.

Then I realized that I don’t even have a baby to be able to use the swaddle blanket, but I do love journals. So the design turned into journals! And they are amazing.

You can now get so many goodies in a new BUNDLE!

The last thing we made is a large 16x20 gold leaf Our Lady of Guadalupe print for the home. The way it shimmers in the light is divine.

Wedding Day!

Photo from our first month of dating

Today as you read this email, I am celebrating my wedding day. In the morning, I’m with my family and my girlfriends as we do our hair (of course someone is doing mine because I have the skill to either put it in a top knot or leave it down) and my mom is doing my make up. She did my make up every day of high school and I can’t believe here we are 11 years later with her doing my make up for my wedding.

My dad might be seeing me for the first time in my dress, his eyes filling with tears. We’re so much alike, me and him. We’ve been through so much.

I’m wondering if I’ll be nervous as we take the car over to the church - maybe the nerves of everyone looking at me will dissipate as I see Paul standing there at the altar.

Next to him will be my spiritual director - the man who essentially saved my life and walked with me on those dark days of my life and questioned my way of thinking and prodded me to get a bigger understanding of God’s majesty and goodness.

I might be saying my vows right now to love Paul all the days of my life or we might be walking over to Mary, this day her feast of the Immaculate Conception. We thank her for her constant guidance in our relationship. The little ways she shows her motherly love.

We might be married by now! (Holy moly!) and inviting our guests to our reception. The reception I spent (likely) way too many hours working on all the tiny details. Maybe we’re eating dinner or maybe we’re having our first dance (This Must be the Place by the Talking Heads).

Whatever time it is that you read this, would you pray for us? Pray for our marriage and the family we are starting together. Pray that we might be a spot of love and light on this earth.

Today, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, I would be remiss to not speak about her guiding hand in our lives. Paul and I met on the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima (of course the last day of the novena I was praying to find a partner - how very cliche of me!!!). We were engaged on the Feast of the Epiphany (unknown to Paul as he is not Catholic). The few weeks after that in January 2018, we found a venue that we liked and inquired about available dates. Low and behold, the only available date left in 2018 was December 8 - this beautiful feast day. And this coming week, we will go to Mexico City for our honeymoon — which happens to also be the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe where we can go to her Basilica to celebrate!

The end of this year’s motto for me is “He makes all things new.” Thank you, friends, for journeying with me through (so many) break ups, struggles, joys. It is only fitting that you are here with us in a tiny way today. Thank you for joining this community of people who seek to BE A HEART.

And thank you for supporting my business in a small way by purchasing gifts for others (and gifts for yourself). These holiday sales are sustaining my bills so that I can take a few weeks off for a honeymoon and to relish in the joy of being a newlywed.

Have no fear, our team  will be shipping until December 20th so you can make sure to get all your holiday presents before Christmas.

Today use the code PAULANDERICA for 25% off!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Shop Small Saturday

In honor of Shop Small Saturday, I thought it would be a perfect time to answer some common questions that I get about how Be A Heart was started!

First of all, my name is Erica Tighe and two weeks from today I will be married to Paul and become Erica Tighe Campbell! I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and lived there until I moved away for college. My first year was spent at Marian University in Indianapolis until I transferred to DePaul University in Chicago where I got my degree in Sociology.

After college, I joined Heart’s Home and lived in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil for 18 months. Before going there, I read one of their publications that said that our job was to “be a heart - nothing but a heart.” I loved that concept and hoped to live it with my life. I made a blog called Be A Heart where I wrote about my daily life.

I moved to Brooklyn after Brazil and stumbled my way through trying to figure out what I was to do with my life.

After two years in New York, I decided to move to Los Angeles to be closer to my family in Arizona. While I was job searching, I started selling custom calligraphy quotes on Etsy - something that had become my hobby in New York. My brother also helped me build a website and we called this new business, Be A Heart (because I had 500 instagram followers, which we didn’t want to lose and it now makes me laugh!)

In February 2015, after not being able to find a job that felt like the right fit, I decided that I would try to be a full time designer. I had no idea what that meant or where the work would come from. I did a lot of small custom projects and when I didn’t have work, I made my own paintings. I put the few products on my website and made a few sales.

That summer, I taught my first calligraphy class and fell in love with teaching in this form. I made a calligraphy kit after that and taught more and more classes around the country. I LOVED meeting and connecting with people over the next few years.

In March of 2016, I was published in Elle Magazine and I think that is still one of my favorite moments of my career.

In October 2016, I signed a contract to write my first book, which came out in November 2017.

In January 2017, I hired my first employee and we were now a team of 2!

We worked on so many events, calligraphy classes, branding projects for other companies and products in our own shop!

In January 2018, we became a team of 3 - Chelsea is our design assistant and Kelly manages the shop! This year has been such a balance of trying to figure out how to plan a wedding and run a business! We launched our first swaddle blankets (!!) and the bathing suit that gave me so many gray hairs.

The Marian Bandana was a bigger hit than I ever expected and now we are working on producing more of our own products on top of our work for other companies.

In August of this year, we moved out of my house into a gorgeous studio in Silverlake, Los Angeles. We are now not tripping over each other and have some room to expand.

And soon enough, I’ll be a married woman and am excited to see how the change in my personal life affects what comes into my work.

We are so appreciative of you supporting this small business.

xx,
Erica
