The Best Day of Our Lives

On December 8, 2018, I married Paul Campbell. If you want to read about how we met, you can read it here. If you want to see our engagement photos you can see them here and you can read a little reflection from me the week of our wedding here!

We asked our friends, Anthony and Marcellino, the owners of Sherwood Fellows, if they would film our wedding for us. We just wanted to have something that on our anniversaries, we could pull it out and remember the “overwhelming grace” that we had been given in our lives. We wanted the video to celebrate all that has happened in our lives to get to this joyous moment.

I hope in watching it that it gives you hope, gives you joy and gives you a reminder to strive to be the person that God created you to be. Enjoy!

We're Getting Married!

Paul asked me to marry him on January 6, 2018 in Joshua Tree, on a pile of boulders overlooking the vast land, just the two of us. It was pure magic. We are getting married on December 8, 2018 (the feast of the Immaculate Conception!). We asked Sarah to come to my neighborhood to capture us where we spent many of our dates and time falling in love.

We drink so much coffee so we had to photograph the coffee shop down the street from my house.

Then over to Echo Park Lake for a little stroll.

We saw the churro set up and knew we just had to have some. We patiently waited in line and then had the most delicious churros of our lives. (I got her card so that we can hire her to come to the wedding!)

Paul is my guy and I am ever so lucky to have his love and to get to journey through the rest of our days together.

All photographs are taken by Sarah Ellefson

Chicago Calligraphy Workshops.

hannah-hoggatt-photoraphy_0001 We had such luck to have an amazing photographer at our classes in Chicago. Hannah is a long time friend of mine and not only did she lend us her cute apartment, but she photographed all three classes! (AND if you are in Chicago or can get to Chicago easily, she is offering all of our followers $50 off a photo session - this could be for your own portraits (she is one of the only people who takes photos of me that I actually like myself) or family sessions for holiday cards. You can email her from her site and tell her that you're a friend of Be A Heart for your discount!

I so loved being able to relive those days that were so full of joy. It's one of my favorite things about teaching - not only do I get to pass on something that I love, but I get to experience the joy of my students. It's a moment of friendship - some making new friends and some spending time with old friends. It is a time away from our phones and computers and a time to learn something new.

It's not often as adults that we get to learn brand new things. Most of our days are spent doing the dishes, cleaning the floor, folding laundry, sitting at our desks doing the work we are good at. So I think my favorite part of the three hour class is seeing everyone in the first five minutes of using the calligraphy nib and ink. It is so different than using a regular pen so it takes us back to our first years of school in learning how to write.

You can check out the rest of the gallery here!

We have a Modern Calligraphy class in Los Angeles at Makers Mess on November 3rd, Calligraphy and Brush Lettering in Phoenix on the 10th and 11th and then a Calligraphy class in Tucson on the 12th. And if we haven't come to your city yet, comment below with where you want us to go! We are in the process of creating a winter Calligraphy Tour. Or you can buy the kit that is used in the class here!

Free Calendar Download.

Today is June 1 and the weather is finally warming up here in Los Angeles. My mental calendar is so full that I decided I better put it down on actual paper so that I can keep everything straight and sane this month. And since I was making a calendar for myself, I figured I might as well offer it to you as well. You can download it here! It is only June to September (I'm only thinking in terms of summer months right now!) You can download and print it and get your life in order, too!

We've had some really amazing things happening over here this past month - if you didn't see (follow along on Instagram for a more real time update!)

1. We were published in the June 2016 issue of ELLE Magazine! It was so fun to be a part of the Crystal Meers & Murray Miller Wedding in Ojai! Check out the beautiful spread (page 146 & 147) the next time you're at the store!

2. We have been selling out of local classes at Maker's Mess. We have a Modern Calligraphy Class coming up on June 16th and a Brush Lettering class on June 30th. We are also offering kids' calligraphy classes every Tuesday all summer! Check out the events calendar for all updates on classes!

3. Erica was featured in Radiant Magazine for their yearly publication. You can order it here and until June 3rd, there is a giveaway for a free copy along with this new print on instagram!

We are busily planning new classes in new states and even an online calligraphy course!

Art + Compassion.

art-and-compassion2 The founder of Heart's Home, Father Thierry de Roucy wrote in an article, "Friendship is an exchange… The work of art is a balm on our wounds and we are a balm on the work of art’s wounds. This is the glorious and mutual task of man and art."

I highly recommend checking out the whole article to wet your palate.

We are thrilled to have Father Paul Anel of Heart's Home with us for an evening to discuss the meeting of Art + Compassion in Los Angeles on February 11, 2016.

Based in Brooklyn, Father Paul leads an extensive and successful outreach program to the artist community, organizing studio and gallery visits, art discussions, and film screenings. This led him to numerous collaborations with such notables as Sagrada Familia’s sculptor Etsuro Sotoo, Vanguard Documentary founder Charles Hobson, jazz pianist Marjorie Eliot, acclaimed klezmer virtuoso David Krakauer, and painter Sean Scully.

We will have light h'ordeuvres and cocktails and Father Paul will begin speaking at 8pm. Please invite your friends!
