4 Simple Ways To Celebrate The Transfiguration

August 6th marks the Feast of the Transfiguration. On this day, we commemorate when Jesus brought three of his disciples to a mountain to pray moments before he was transfigured. In honor of this feast day, we're sharing four simple and family friendly ways to celebrate!

The Transfiguration Explained

The transfiguration refers to the moment when Jesus underwent a remarkable transformation in the presence of three of His disciples: Peter, James, and John. As the men climbed a mountain, Jesus' appearance changed, and His face shone like the sun, while His clothes became dazzling white. This awe-inspiring event showcased Jesus' divine glory and revealed His true nature as the Son of God.

The transfiguration was extremely significant, as it served as confirmation of Jesus' identity as the Messiah. By revealing His divine radiance, Jesus affirmed His authority and fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. It also provided encouragement and strength to the disciples who were about to face the challenges of Jesus' crucifixion. Witnessing the transfiguration gave them a glimpse of the glory that awaited Jesus after His resurrection. Just as Jesus was transfigured, we're all called to undergo a spiritual transformation, becoming more like Christ in our lives.

4 Simple Ways To Celebrate The Transfiguration

Eat Grapes

Did you know that grapes are blessed on the Feast of the Transfiguration?! Grapes growing on a vine is a natural transfiguration (and a yummy treat!). The grapes start as a seed and develop into a bud, then a flower, and finally ripen into a juicy fruit. Grapes are also the same fruit that is crushed into juice or wine - Representing the Blood of Christ in the Eucharist.

On the feast day, go to your local grocery store and buy some fresh grapes. Eat the grapes, or turn them into grape jelly or popsicles. Enjoy a glass of red wine with your family and friends. With each bite into a grape, or sip of wine, reflect on how it represents Jesus.

Go On A Hike

It is written that Jesus took apostles Peter, James and John to the top of Mount Tabor, where he was then transfigured. In honor of this beautiful moment, go hike up a mountain or walk along a trail. Once you get to the top of the mountain (or finish your walk), reflect on the glory of God. Say a prayer to Jesus. Read the Transfiguration story (Mark 9: 2-13, Matthew 17:1-13, Luke 9:28-36).

Build Three Tents

Your littles are going to love this activity! Using blankets and furniture in your home, build three cozy tents. Make sure to bring a pillow, cozy blanket and some snacks. Spend time reflecting on the Transfiguration, pray or journal or listen to music and sing praise to Jesus. Ask God to help transform your heart.

Make a Butterfly Garden

The Transfiguration is often referred to as a metamorphosis in the Eastern Church. Set up a butterfly garden and watch the caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies.

All in all, the transfiguration of Jesus reminds us of the transformative power of Christ and encourages us to seek spiritual growth and holiness. As we reflect on this feast day, may we be inspired to embrace our own journey of transformation and draw closer to the radiant glory of God.

“Listen to Jesus and follow him. That’s the message of the Transfiguration.” - Pope Francis.
