8 Inspiring Quotes by Saint Clare of Assisi

August 11 marks the Feast Day of Saint Clare of Assisi! The founder of the order of poor ladies, Saint Clare of Assisi was an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. She is the patron saint of eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry, television, bicycle messengers, good weather, and needle workers. Saint Clare is a powerful example of an incredible saint that we can all learn from. Her life story is not only inspiring but also an important reminder that living virtuously and authentically in faith leads to a path towards holiness.

About Saint Clare

Saint Clare was born on July 16, 1194 in Assisi, Italy. She was born into a wealthy Italian family, but shunned her luxurious upbringing at a very young age. She dedicated her life to God and was fascinated in helping the poor.

When Clare was 18 years old, Francis of Assisi came to preach in a nearby church, and Clare was inspired by his words. She even asked Francis to help her dedicate her life to God, and he vowed to do so. Clare's parents had arranged for her to marry a wealthy young man, but she refused and fled to the Porziuncola Chapel, where Francis took her in. She then took vows dedicating her life to God - which was the beginning of the Second Order of Saint Francis.

Clare's sister Agnes joined her, and soon after other women joined their order. The ladies moved to the Church of San Damiano, and were known as the "Poor Ladies" for their ascetic lifestyle (This order was later renamed to the Order of Saint Clare). Saint Clare later became the abbess, and spent her time doing manual labor and praying. She worked on changing the governing rule from the Benedictine spirit to a new Franciscan rule. Pope Innocent IV approved the rule, two days before Saint Clare died. The rule was known for the commitment to prayer.

As Francis grew ill, Clare cared for him until he died in 1226. After his death, she continued to promote her order and dedicated her life to prayer. In 1255, Pope Alexander IV canonized Clare.
